What is a URL shortener?

It turns a long address into a short one that points to the same place. A search result full of parameters becomes g.vu/k7q, which fits in a message, on a business card, or in a sentence you say out loud.

Why is there a screen before my link opens?

Because a short link hides where it goes. That screen shows you the destination domain, so you decide with the address in front of you instead of clicking blind. It is the main reason this service exists.

We also compare destinations against public threat lists, when a link is created and again later. That catches a lot, and it will never catch everything: a page can turn hostile after we looked, and no list is complete. Treat the screen as information, not as a guarantee, and trust your own judgement about the domain you see.

Links to a handful of well-known domains skip the screen, because showing it there helps nobody.

My link does not work, and it has capital letters in it

Capital letters count. g.vu/aB and g.vu/Ab are two different links, so a code copied by hand or read from a photo can land on the wrong one, or on nothing.

If your link leads nowhere, the page will list the codes written with the same letters and let you pick. We never pick for you: those links go to different places, and choosing for you could send you somewhere you did not want.

Links created now have no capitals at all, and avoid the letters that get misread: no i, l, o or u. So this only affects older links.

Can I see where a link goes without opening it?

Yes. Add a + at the end. To inspect g.vu/k7q, open g.vu/k7q+. It works on any g.vu link, including ones somebody sent you.

Can a link be used as a subdomain?

Yes, when the code has no capital letter. k7q.g.vu then leads to the same place as g.vu/k7q. Domain names ignore capitals, which is why a code holding one cannot be used this way.

What characters can I use in my own name?

Letters, digits, hyphen and underscore, from eight characters up. Non-Latin alphabets work too, Japanese, Arabic, Cyrillic, Chinese, as do most emojis 👍, and they can be mixed, so viveles🦆 is a valid choice. Anything that can be encoded as Punycode works.

How does the link on pictures work?

You upload a picture and give a link. If the link is not already a g.vu one it gets shortened, then the code and its QR are drawn onto the image. You choose the position, the colours and the size. All that is left is to save or share the result.

Can I shorten the page I am on in one click?

Yes. Drag this link into your bookmarks bar, then click it from any page you want to share: g.vu - shorten this page

Can I change or delete a link I created?

Not by yourself, not yet. Write to [email protected] with the link and we will do it. Self-service is on the list, precisely so that you no longer have to ask.

A destination cannot be changed on a link that already exists, in either case. A code always keeps the address it was created with.

I found a g.vu link that leads somewhere harmful

Send it to [email protected] with the code, and the address it took you to if you have it. Reported links are checked by hand and blocked. You do not need an account, and you do not need to explain yourself.

What do you do with my data?

There are no analytics or marketing cookies. Creating a link needs no account and no email address. We do not track the people who follow your links.

What is stored is the link itself: the code, the destination, and when it was created and last checked.
